  Stephen Birchard attended veterinary school at the University of Missouri
 \nCollege of Veterinary Medicine (Class of 1976). He was an associate vete
 rinarian in a\nsmall animal practice in New Jersey for two years. Dr. Birc
 hard completed a small\nanimal surgical residency program and Masters degr
 ee at Purdue University School of\nVeterinary Medicine in 1981 and became 
 a Diplomate of the American College of\nVeterinary Surgeons in 1984. Dr. B
 irchard spent two years as a Staff Surgeon at the\nAnimal Medical Center i
 n New York City and then joined the faculty of The Ohio State\nCollege of 
 Veterinary Medicine. He was Head of Small Animal Surgery at Ohio State for
 \nsix years. At Ohio State\, he received the Norden Distinguished Teacher 
 Award (1985)\, the\nOmega Tau Sigma Fraternity National Gamma Award for di
 stinguished service to the\nveterinary profession (1994)\, the John Lyman 
 Jr. Award for Clinical Teaching Excellence\n(2006)\, and the Excellence in
  Teaching Award (2008). Dr. Birchard retired from The\nOhio State Universi
 ty in July 2010 and is now an educational consultant\, author\, and\nspeak
 er at veterinary conferences.\n\nDr. Birchard’s clinical specialty is sm
 all animal soft tissue surgery. He has\nwritten numerous book chapters and
  journal articles. He is the chief editor of the\nSaunders Manual of Small
  Animal Practice and writes an educational blog for\npractitioners\, “Ve
 terinary Key Points.” Dr. Birchard has recently published a book\nentitl
 ed: “Their Tails Kept Wagging\; Pets Show Us How Hope\, Forgiveness\, an
 d Love\nPrevail\,” a collection of moving stories about patients who sur
 vived critical illness.
