 e is designed to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the key aspec
 ts of veterinary oncology\, focusing on the approach to masses\, diagnosti
 c testing\, staging\, and treatment options\, with the aim of improving co
 llaboration between oncologists and general practitioners.\nCancer Treatme
 nt Options- What to Do When Owners Decline Referral\nDescription: Cancer i
 s all too common in our pets. Further guidance and treatment with a veteri
 nary oncologist is ideal\, but what do you do when pet owners decline refe
 rral? This lecture will discuss different treatments which can be done in 
 primary practice such as targeted therapies\, metronomic chemotherapy\, no
 n-chemotherapeutic drugs\, and palliative care. This presentation will equ
 ip primary veterinarians with practical knowledge to manage cancer treatme
 nt within their clinics ensuring they can provide compassionate and effect
 ive care even when specialty care is not an option.\nMastering Difficult C
 onversations: Enhancing Communication Skills for Delivering Bad News\nDesc
 ription: We all communicate with people all the time every day. This talk
  will discuss important aspects of communication such as core communicatio
 n\, how to improve your communication skills\, and how to use these skills
  to give bad news. Being a better communicator will lead to improved clien
 t compliance\, client satisfaction\, and job satisfaction for you and your
  team. We will review nonverbal communication\, listening\, empathy\, and 
 SPIKE theory to give difficult news to pet owners.\nPractical treatment ap
 proaches for mast cell tumors in dogs and cats\nDescription: Mast cell tum
 ors can quickly become complicated with multiple different approaches poss
 ible. This session will review treatments like chemotherapy and radiation 
 therapy and when to use them. We will also discuss treatments which can be
  done in the primary clinic such as Stelfonta and how to properly use it. 
 We will also review other injectable treatments options and surgical appro
 aches done in primary practice.\n\nDr. Venable is a medical oncologist who
  has always been surrounded by animals growing up on a farm in the Midwest
 . She obtained her veterinary degree from the University of Missouri and g
 raduated cum laude. After veterinary school\, Dr. Venable pursued further
  training as a small animal intern at the University of Georgia. She then 
 completed her 3-year medical oncology residency at the world-renowned Colo
 rado State Flint Animal Cancer Center. During her residency\, she achieved
  a master’s degree and studied new cancer therapies and clinical trials.
  She continues to seek out clinical trials and cutting-edge therapies for 
 her patients. Dr. Venable has authored numerous publications and has been 
 a speaker on local and national levels. She is the founder of Pet Cancer C
 are Consulting\, an innovative teleconsulting service which consults with 
 the family vet and pet owner together to give personalized responses and n
 eeded information to make an informed decision on treatments. She is also 
 a VIN consultant\, research consultant\, and was an adjunct professor of v
 eterinary oncology at Midwestern University. She is a member of many organ
 izations and currently a director of the board of the Arizona Veterinary M
 edical Association. Her oncology philosophy is one of a team-based approac
 h with the family and referring veterinarians for compassionate\, individu
 alized care\, and optimal quality of life for cancer patients and their fa
 milies.\n\nDr. Venable enjoys the outdoors and being on the trail with her
  wonderful husband and their young daughters. Service opportunities are im
 portant to them as they volunteer at church and abroad as her husband work
 s for a non-profit building schools in the developing world. Together they
  go on projects all over the globe with Be the Change Volunteers.
